Policy Briefing — Commission proposes eIDAS 2.0 digital identity framework
On 3 June 2021 the European Commission proposed an eIDAS 2.0 regulation creating EU Digital Identity Wallets and mandating high-assurance authentication for key public and private services.
The Commission presented its eIDAS revision on 3 June 2021, introducing EU Digital Identity Wallets, strengthening assurance for qualified electronic attributes, and obligating major online platforms and public services to accept interoperable EU credentials. The proposal adds cybersecurity requirements, certification schemes, and deadlines for Member State wallet issuance.
Product and security leaders should plan for wallet-based authentication and attribute validation flows, evaluate reliance on identity providers for KYC/AML use cases, and track standardization timelines that will determine technical specifications and conformity assessments.
