G7 Launches Hiroshima Process on Generative AI — May 19, 2023
G7 leaders meeting in Hiroshima directed ministers to establish the Hiroshima AI Process to develop inclusive governance for generative AI and foundation models.
The leaders’ communiqué recognised the transformative potential of generative AI and committed to advancing discussions on governance, intellectual property, disinformation risks, and transparency. It tasked digital ministers with reporting by year-end on collaborative measures anchored in democratic values and human rights.
- Risk mitigation. G7 partners will assess safeguards for managing systemic risks from generative AI, including incident reporting and content authenticity mechanisms.
- Standards coordination. The process links work across the OECD, GPAI, and standards bodies to align testing, assurance, and watermarking practices.
- Inclusive engagement. Leaders called for cooperation with emerging economies and international organisations to ensure global interoperability.
Teams should monitor Hiroshima Process updates for guidance on transparency, watermarking, and safety evaluations expected to influence future regulation.
