U.S. Department of Defense Issues Responsible AI Strategy — June 2, 2022
The Department of Defense released its Responsible AI Strategy and Implementation Pathway, operationalising its AI ethical principles across the acquisition lifecycle.
The strategy defines six lines of effort—Governance, Warfighter Trust, Product Lifecycle, Acquisition, Requirements, and Responsible AI Ecosystem. It establishes new oversight roles, testing requirements, and education programmes to embed responsible practices in defense AI systems.
- Governance framework. The Chief Digital and AI Office (CDAO) leads policy, with Component Leads responsible for implementation.
- Lifecycle controls. Programmes must document risk assessments, testing protocols, and monitoring plans for fielded systems.
- Training and culture. The strategy mandates workforce training on ethical AI and encourages partnerships with allies.
Defense-focused teams should align solutions with DoD’s Responsible AI milestones and reporting templates.
